BEK Communications Technology Scholarship — Valley City State University

Information

  1. Application Process/Requirements
    The BEK Communications Technology Scholarship is awarded to customers receiving BEK Fiber services based upon their demonstrated levels of community service and proven academic, leadership and degree program success.

    • All applicants must submit a completed BEK Communications Technology Scholarship Application. Students must submit an application for admission to the college before submitting a Technology Scholarship Application. Failure to submit a completed BEK Communications Cooperative Scholarship Application and ALL required documentation will result in the applicant NOT being considered for available scholarships.

    • Scholarship applicants must be a U.S. citizen and receive BEK Fiber-based services at the time of the application. BEK Fiber services must be provided to the parents of the student applicant if the student is a dependent of the parents; or applicant must receive BEK Fiber services as an individual if they are no longer a dependent of their parents as filed in the most recent federal tax filing.

    • Scholarship applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average on all high school or college/vocational credits and must plan to enroll or be enrolled on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 college credits or 450 clock hours).
  2. Deadlines for consideration

    BEK Communications Technology Scholarship Application and all requisite academic transcripts and documentation are accepted throughout the specified academic year and are subject to firm deadlines established. Submitted applications will be reviewed for eligibility for each term thereafter for the academic year.

    Application deadline on or before February 14

    Award notification on or before April 1


    If the deadline date listed falls on either Saturday or Sunday, applications will be accepted through the next business day.

  3. High school applicants

    Current high school seniors are required to attach a preliminary official high school transcript (grade 9 through the first semester of grade 12) with their Technology Scholarship Application and apply for admission to the college. Upon graduation from high school, a final transcript must be submitted to the Student Records Office at the college.


    All home educated students must provide official documentation of registration with their high school district for grades 11 and 12, a Home School affidavit, and either a minimum score of 520 computation and 521 verbal on the SAT; or a minimum score of 19 English, 20 Math, and 22 Reading on the ACT; or a minimum 104 Reading, 99 Writing and 123 Math PERT test scores. The required documentation must be on file with the Student Records Office at the college.

  4. All other applicants

    If an applicant’s high school graduation date is less than 10 years prior to the beginning date of the current Fall term AND the applicant has not completed at least 12 college or vocational credits, or 450 clock hours, the applicant must submit an official copy of their high school transcript with the Technology Scholarship Application. Selection consideration will be based on the high school grade point average. High school dual enrollment courses are considered in calculating the high school grade point average until the student has completed at least 12 credits beyond the high school graduation.


    If an applicant’s high school graduation date is more than 10 years prior to the beginning date of the current Fall term, applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 college prep, college or vocational credits, or 450 clock hours from any college(s). The combined GPA will be used to determine the cumulative GPA.


    If an applicant has completed 12 or more college or vocational credits, or 450 clock hours at any college(s), the applicant must submit the official transcript with the Technology Scholarship Application.


    A student who has scored a 3000 or higher on the General Education Development Exam (GED) may be eligible for a BEK Communications Cooperative Technology Scholarship. Applicant must have tested or re-tested for the GED exam within the last 12 months.

  5. Selection process/Criteria/Committee

    There are two steps in the BEK Communications Cooperative Technology Scholarships selection process, which can be awarded annually or each semester at the discretion of the college:


    Step 1:

    VCSU Financial Aid Office/Scholarship Selection Committee will use BEK's Technology Scholarship Application approved selection criteria to provide a short list of no more than (5) fully qualified candidates for review and final award by the BEK Communications Cooperative Board of Directors.


    Step 2:

    Scholarships awarded by a BEK Communications Cooperative Board of Directors will occur at the monthly board meeting following the delivery of no more than (5) fully qualified candidates, scoring and applications for review and final approval by the Board.


    Selection Committee

    Award amount: $2,500 for an academic year or $1,250 for an academic semester (2/year).

    Number of awards: 1 ($2,500) or 2 ($1,250) each academic year.

    Length of award: Minimum of one semester, maximum of 2 semesters.

    Selection made by: VCSU Financial Aid Office/College Scholarship Selection Committee.

    Final approval by: BEK Communications Cooperative Board of Directors.


    Application procedures and selection criteria

    1. Complete a BEK Communications Cooperative Technology Scholarship Application and return it to the Valley City State University Financial Aid office.
    2. Applicants must have a completed Application for Admission on file with the Enrollment Services Office prior to registering for classes. High school and/or college transcripts must also be on file in the Enrollment Services Office by the required deadline.
    3. Scholarship deadlines are strictly enforced: Applications due on or before February 14.


    General scholarship guidelines

    1. Student must meet Valley City State University academic and enrollment standards.
    2. Student’s parents (if a dependent), or student (if not a dependent of parent), must be a BEK Fiber Services customer or member.
    3. Student must enroll, or be enrolled, in a program of technology study leading to an Associates or Bachelors degree. Examples include: Computer Information Systems, Professional Communications with a Digital Media Management Concentration, Software Engineering, and Technology Education.
    4. Scholarship can be applied toward registration fees, books, or additional classroom materials.
    5. This application is available online on the BEK website at www.bek.coop and at the VCSU Financial Aid website at http://www.vcsu.edu/financialaid.
  6. Disclaimer

    This Technology Scholarship Application will be used to award the BEK Communications Technology Scholarship administered by Valley City State University and BEK Communications Cooperative. This application, any required academic transcripts, and documentation must be received on or before February 14. This application is valid for the academic year.


    High School:
    Official transcript must be on file in the Financial Aid Office at the college.


    Home School:
